How to Keep Your Home Pest-Free this Winter

Hibu Websites • November 22, 2021

Winter is a time when many people have to be more careful about pests in their homes. Insects and rodents come out from the cold looking for food, warmth, and shelter. And unfortunately, they often find it in our houses! In this article, we'll share some tips on how to keep your home pest-free all winter long.

1. Seal Up Holes and Cracks

The best way to prevent pests from entering your home is to find where they are getting in and fix the problem. You should start by sealing up any openings around pipes or other passages that may be hiding insects, rodents, snakes, etc. Use caulk, weather-stripping, steel wool, wire mesh, etc., to seal up any openings you find.

2. Keep Food Items Tightly Sealed

The second most important way to prevent pests from entering your home is to make sure anything food-related (pantry items, pet foods, vegetables, and fruit in the kitchen or pantry, etc.) is properly sealed up. That includes storage containers, jars with screw-on lids, etc. Many insects and rodents are drawn to the smell of food, so make sure they can't get in!

3. Keep Your Home Clean

The third most important way to prevent pests from entering your home is to clean it. A messy house makes it easier for insects and small rodents to find shelter and food and makes it harder for you to find any pests that might already be in your home.

4. Remove Their Shelter

Insects and rodents need somewhere to go when the weather is bad -- this means you have to remove potential sources of shelter from your home. Remove clutter, old furniture, or anything else that might provide bugs, rodents, etc., with a warm place to sleep during the cold months.

5. Look for Signs of Infestation

No matter how well you keep your house, it's possible that some pests could already be in your home. Keep an eye out for signs of infestation -- droppings, chewed items, nests, etc. If you do see any evidence of insects or rodents, take steps to get rid of them as soon as possible.

6. Hire a Pest Control Service

If you do find any signs of pest infestation, you'll probably need to hire a
pest control service for help. A pest control company can make sure the problem is taken care of quickly and thoroughly. They can also help with preventive services.

Termites are one of the most common pests in the United States. According to a recent survey done by Pest World, termites were the most commonly reported problem among homeowners, with 20% of respondents naming them their main pest concern. Follow the tips outlined above to ensure that they stay out of your home for good.
