Top 5 Signs of a Termite Infestation

Hibu Websites • Jan 20, 2022

Termites can do a lot of damage before you even realize what's going on, so it's important to nip an infestation in the bud as soon as possible. So, if you see any of these signs, it's time to call in the professionals.

1. Tunnels or Mud Tubes

Many species of termites build tunnels to travel to and from their food sources. These can be found on vertical surfaces, near windows, patios, fences, and walls. If you're seeing these tunnels pop up around your house, make sure to contact termite services as soon as possible.

2. Wood Damage

Termites eat wood, and they do a lot of damage while they're doing it. Inside your home, termite infestations can leave behind structural damage that you might not even notice at first glance. Look for cracked or crumbling paint on walls or surfaces, particularly near windows and doors. Also, look for dirt trails along baseboards and patios. These are telltale signs of an infestation.

3. Swarming

If you see what looks like flying ants swarming around the outside of your house or near windows, pay close attention. Swarming is one of the most obvious signs of an infestation, and it occurs when winged termites leave their colony to reproduce. If you see this, it's time to call in the professionals.

4. Frass

As the termites eat through the wood in your home, they produce frass. This is basically their waste product, and you might see it near windows or other areas where the wood has been eaten away to make way for tunnels. Frass often looks like patches of sawdust or tiny pebbles. If you see this anywhere inside your home, you're likely dealing with a termite infestation.

5. You Spot Termites

This is actually the first sign of a termite infestation, and it's one you should never ignore. If you see termites anywhere inside or outside your home, contact a professional exterminator as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more damage they'll do.

Termite Services Can Help

According to Pest World, a queen termite can lay up to 40,000 eggs in a single day, and a termite colony can have as many as 2 million members. If you see any of these signs, make sure to contact a local exterminator right away. There's no reason to let termites destroy your home or cause structural damage.
