Rid Your Home Of Roaches

Maryland is home to a variety of roach species, including the German cockroach, the Oriental cockroach, and the American cockroach. Without frequent pest control, these unwelcome pests can invade your home, sneaking into cupboards and lurking in dark, dank corners. A brief overview of the different types of cockroaches that call Maryland home will help you make informed pest control decisions.

The American Cockroach

The American cockroach prefers a balmy, humid climate. Further south, these pests are content to remain outside year round. However, Maryland’s cold winters drive these pests inside where they are able to find warmth, food, and moisture. In addition to the fact that the American cockroach has been known to carry harmful bacteria and even worms, the fact that these pests are capable of flight ups their ick factor exponentially. How to tell if the American cockroach has moved into your home? Look for their tell-tale dark egg capsules stashed throughout your home, as well as the characteristic small, blunt droppings left in dark areas throughout your home.

The German Cockroach

Excellent scavengers, German cockroaches will eat practically anything. In addition to their hearty appetites, these pests are capable of reproducing at an alarming rate, with a single female spawning six generations in a single year. The German cockroach prefers to live in warm, humid areas, so you are likely to find them in your kitchen or bathroom. The scour your home at night for crumbs and leftover kitchen scraps, but in a pinch they have been known to live on soap and even glue. To keep German cockroaches out of your home, keep cardboard to a minimum. These pests enter your home by stowing away in boxes and even paper grocery bags.

The Oriental Cockroach

The Oriental cockroach is a hardy species, able to survive outdoors even in cold regions. You may spot these pests in wood piles or under mulch, particularly in late summer. The female Oriental cockroach can produce up to 130 offspring in her lifetime. These humidity-loving pests are drawn to kitchens, basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces, and laundry rooms. They also reside in sewers, garbage cans, dumpsters, or anywhere else filth is found.

Without regular pest control, your home is susceptible to these cockroach species and other unwanted pests. Once cockroaches find a way into your home, they quickly multiply and are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Those little plastic roach traps and DIY fogger treatments just won’t do the job.
